Accelerated Reader Contest Time!

Who likes treats?!  Well, with this AR contest you and your entire class can enjoy a sweet treat from Mr. Landy!  Here’s how it will work….

Each week we will tally up all Reading Practice Quiz points taken from your homeroom class.  At the end of each month, the class in each grade with the most points will earn a sweet treat for the class.

Here’s the catch, 90% of the students will need to at least take one (1) AR quiz that month to qualify.  So, in order to win, your entire class will need to participate in AR.

How do you know who is in the lead?  Outside the library, AR boards by grade are made up in our fun Camp Read-A-Lot theme, you can see how your class is doing each week by watching your camp tag.  The points on your ‘camp tag’ are month-to-date and are adjusted every Friday.

Why an AR contest???  AR is an amazing tool to see and watch students grow in their reading comprehension; why would you not want to participate?  We want to build the excitement around AR and this is just one small way to gain the hype.  I mean who doesn’t like sweet treats?!

RIF Distribution Last Week

Did you notice your child brought home a free book last week?!? Each year, RHPTA participates in the Reading Is Fundamental program where each child receives a free book! A big THANK YOU to our RIF Chair, Jennifer Sheffield, and her volunteers for helping distribute a book to each child at RHE! Y’all did an outstanding job!

Battle of the Books Info

We've been getting a lot of questions about Battle of the Books (or BoB!). This is a friendly reading competition for students in third, fourth and fifth grade. We will have our campus competition at the end of January, and that will determine which team (one from each grade level), will go on to the district competition at the end of May. (This is a district event, so we cannot make any changes to the number of teams or grade levels chosen to participate.)

Students read books from an assigned list and practice writing questions that they think may be asked. During the competition, they are asked questions by the moderator (Mr. Landy), and have a set time to answer. The team with the most correct answers wins!

We will evaluate in January, closer to competition time, to see if we will allow guests to view the competition.

Students who have already indicated their desire to compete are being placed on teams and assigned coaches this week. Students can check out books from the library to read.

Please let me know if you have additional questions not answered above!
